Hi, everyone! I hope you all were inspired to take Shipka's thoughts into your own work. I know I did in my new art installation. I was perusing through Pinterest, minding my own business, when I scrolled past an interesting assemblage. It was a deconstructed birds nest. It had a nest in the center of the photograph. Then, the artist broke down the nest. She had individual bunches of "ingredients" and materials for the nest. She showcased the fruit, shells, sticks, leaves, moss, bones, and burs that birds use throughout the world to create their homes. She created an expansive piece that is twofold. First, she showed how birds literally assemble their homes. Secondly, she showed the biodiversity at play and how it affects birds in different ecosystems. Personally, I love the inclusion of the shells. They stood out to me and reminded me that birds on the coast have much different materials at their disposal than birds in Colorado, for example.

My new piece had a different goal. When I walk around, I see trash everywhere. I wanted that to be reflected in my work. So, I created an accurate representation of how birds make their nests in Tallahassee, Florida. I collected trash, leaves, moss, twigs, and burs to create a new piece. It is overwhelming constructed with pollution. I included plastic from a Publix plastic bag, straws, plastic from 6-packs, and a receipt. I see actual birds nest like these and it makes me so sad. Birds should have the ability to create homes without filth being a part of the equation. So, I created this art installation to bring awareness to the pollution in Tallahassee. I want people to see my piece and become sad, angry, whatever it is they must feel to inspire them to be more mindful of their environment and throwing that Double Big Gulp out on the side of the road. I hope you all like it!

Here is the original piece:
